Justin Huntley dug into a complex pressure problem at a Union County Water pump station. The county recognized him with its quarterly Caught in the Act Award.
Huntley, a utility services manager, investigated a water hammer issue at the Watkins Road Booster Pump Station, according to Union County Water. Water hammer occurs when sudden changes in water flow create pressure surges. The announcement was posted Oct. 30.
The problem fell outside Huntley's normal duties. He took it on anyway, isolating specific pump and valve components to test whether they were causing the surges. When the pressure spikes stopped with those components out of service, he kept digging and identified another potential factor. A vendor assessment was still needed to confirm the root cause, but Huntley's work narrowed the field.
Water Superintendent Jonathan Smith nominated Huntley for the award. Smith wrote that Huntley "is an invaluable member of the team whose hard work … set a powerful example for all of us."
County Manager Brian Matthews praised Huntley for taking on a difficult technical challenge. Matthews said Huntley's initiative and determination reflect the dedication county employees bring to serving the community.
Huntley will receive a $250 bonus and is eligible for the annual Caught in the Act Employee of the Year Award. The quarterly award recognizes Union County Government employees who go above and beyond their regular responsibilities.
Separately, Union County Water's work in downtown Waxhaw continues. The utility completed a water main replacement project that swapped out roughly 8,000 linear feet of cast-iron mains dating to the 1930s, according to the Town of Waxhaw. Phase 2, sewer line replacement in the downtown area, began in fall 2026 and is expected to last about 10 months.
Asphalt repair tied to that downtown water project is set to begin Monday, Nov. 2, on King Street and other downtown streets, according to the town's announcement. Residents with questions can contact Assistant Town Engineer James Kelly at [email protected] or 704-843-2195.
