Weddington boys soccer beat Sun Valley 3-1 on the road Wednesday, Oct. 14, with both the varsity and junior varsity squads posting identical scores.
The varsity win moved head coach Keith Beaty's Warriors to 8-7-2 overall and 4-4 in Southern Carolina Conference play, according to MaxPreps. Weddington sits fourth in the conference standings.
The Weddington High School athletics department said on X that both the JV and varsity teams beat Sun Valley 3-1 that night. The account tagged Union County Public Schools and the NCHSAA athletic zone in the post.
The victory snapped a brief skid for Weddington, which fell 0-3 to Charlotte Catholic on Oct. 12. Before that loss, the Warriors had beaten Butler 3-0 on Oct. 8 and tied Lake Norman 1-1 on Oct. 7.
The conference slate has been uneven. Weddington beat Piedmont 2-1 on Oct. 5 and topped Cuthbertson 3-1 on Sept. 28 but lost to Marvin Ridge 0-3 on Sept. 23 and fell to Porter Ridge 1-4 on Sept. 30.
The Enquirer Journal confirmed the 3-1 result and the Warriors' 8-7-2 overall mark and 4-4 conference record.
The win bumped Weddington's national ranking 32 spots to No. 394 and its North Carolina ranking four spots to No. 47, per MaxPreps. The Warriors are No. 12 in Class 7A and No. 16 in the Charlotte media market.
A HighSchoolOT Instagram post dated Oct. 14 described a Southern Carolina 6A/7A conference tournament championship between No. 4 Marvin Ridge and Weddington, stating the Warriors swept Cuthbertson in the semifinals. MaxPreps, however, lists Cuthbertson and Marvin Ridge as upcoming scheduled opponents. The accounts differ on whether the postseason tournament has begun.
MaxPreps shows two home conference games ahead: Marvin Ridge on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. and Cuthbertson on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. Weddington lost to Marvin Ridge 0-3 in September and beat Cuthbertson 3-1.
