Union County deputies have charged a 19-year-old Monroe man and a juvenile in connection with an Aug. 19 shooting that struck two occupied homes in Wingate.
The arrests bring the total number of suspects in the case to five. One of the three suspects arrested earlier, Shauntelle Lyanne Staton, 21, is a Waxhaw resident.
The Union County Sheriff's Office (UCSO) identified the latest adult suspect as Jayden Eimaj Watts of Presson Road in Monroe, according to the Enquirer Journal. Deputies arrested Watts and the juvenile on Wednesday, Oct. 21, Queen City News reported. Both face two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and felony conspiracy.
No one was injured in the shooting on the 1100 block of Eastwood Drive. Three people were inside the two homes at the time, according to arrest warrants cited by the Enquirer Journal.
Watts is being held at the Union County Detention Center on a $500,000 secured bond. The juvenile was transported to the Cabarrus Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The juvenile's age has not been released.
Watts also faces pending charges from November 2025 for allegedly carrying a concealed gun and resisting a public officer, the Enquirer Journal reported. He also allegedly interfered with an electronic monitoring device the following month.
Three arrested within hours of shooting
Deputies had arrested three other suspects within hours of the Aug. 19 shooting after executing a search warrant at an apartment complex in Monroe with help from the Monroe Police Department.
Those three suspects are Oquavyon Tyheem Antwan McBride, 24, of Monroe; Z'nyha Alexandria McClendon, 21, of Monroe; and Staton. Detectives seized the vehicle believed to have been used in the shooting and recovered three firearms from the apartment, according to the Enquirer Journal.
McBride was charged with two counts each of possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, plus felony conspiracy and a parole violation. McClendon and Staton each face two counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, aiding and abetting possession of a firearm by a felon, and felony conspiracy.
According to arrest warrants cited by the Enquirer Journal, McClendon and Staton allegedly assisted McBride in possessing a firearm while knowing he had previously been convicted of a felony. All three were initially held without bond.
The UCSO said in a social media post that the additional arrests reflect continued detective work on the case. Anyone with information can contact the Union County Sheriff's Office.
