All lanes of NC-16 will close nightly between Bonds Grove Church Road and Gray Byrum Road in Union County starting Sunday, Oct. 25.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is widening northbound NC-16 to accommodate a future signalized left turn lane onto Bonds Grove Church Road, according to the agency's DriveNC traffic page.
Lane closures will run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week. Construction activity will also take place during daytime hours, but the DriveNC listing specifies that full lane closures are limited to the overnight window.
The project is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25 and run through Jan. 8, 2027.
NCDOT Charlotte Area posted about the closure on X on Wednesday, Oct. 21, describing it as "Construction on NC 16 Both Directions in Union County from Bonds Grove Church Rd to Gray Byrum Rd. All lanes closed." The DriveNC detail page clarifies that the all-lanes closure applies only during overnight hours.
The DriveNC listing does not include a published detour route for the affected stretch.
NC-16, also labeled Providence Road on Union County maps, is also the subject of a larger NCDOT widening project, U-5769. That project would widen the road to multiple lanes between Rea Road and Waxhaw Parkway. A Waxhaw Board of Commissioners presentation in September 2025 listed a projected construction start of 2030 and anticipated completion between 2033 and 2035. A separate project, U-5769AA, covering the NC-16/Bonds Grove Church Road signal, appeared on the board's agenda for a future update.
Drivers can check for real-time closure updates on the DriveNC website.
