Common Heart is inviting schools, churches and community organizations to host interactive poverty simulations designed to help participants understand the choices families face when money and other resources are limited.
In a Nov. 2 recap, the Union County nonprofit described a recent simulation with South Piedmont Community College and THRIVE! Union and invited other groups to arrange sessions.
The Union County Chamber’s event listing scheduled the partners’ simulation for Friday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at South Piedmont’s Old Charlotte Highway Campus in Monroe.
The exercise places participants in simulated family situations involving financial pressure and difficult decisions. Organizers describe it as an opportunity to build empathy and consider how the community can respond to poverty. The chamber highlighted its relevance to people working in education, health care, human services, business, government, nonprofits, emergency services and faith communities.
Groups interested in hosting a session can contact Detrina Little, Common Heart’s economic empowerment director, at 704-870-0012 or [email protected], the email provided in the nonprofit’s recap.
Common Heart says it began in 2006 and works to address food insecurity and generational poverty in Union County through food assistance and economic empowerment.
