Union County’s Board of Elections received a Platinum Award from Vet the Vote for engaging veterans and military family members as poll workers.
In an Oct. 30 announcement, the county reported that 314 of its 613 poll workers — about 51% — were veterans or military family members. The figures were reported before Election Day, Nov. 3.
Elections Director Kristin Holloway thanked those workers for continuing to serve their communities. Their duties include voter check-in, assistance and keeping polling places operating.
The county highlighted Whitt Deas, who served 41 years in the Air Force and Reserves and was chief judge at the Stallings Fire Department early voting site.
“I love this country. I love my community,” Deas said in the announcement.
Vet the Vote recruits veterans and military family members to work at the polls. Its Thank Them Twice campaign invites residents to submit notes or photos thanking them for their service.
