Families in the Waxhaw area picked up free backpacks stuffed with school supplies on Sunday, Aug. 23, at a back-to-school pop-up hosted by Legacy Rise Venue, the historic chapel and event space at 5017 Waxhaw Marvin Rd.
The event fell one day before nearly 40,000 Union County Public Schools students returned to classrooms on Monday, Aug. 24, according to WFAE.
Legacy Rise, which opened earlier this year, organized the pop-up to bring families, local businesses and young entrepreneurs together, according to the venue's event listing on the Downtown Waxhaw Association's calendar. Backpacks were available while supplies lasted.
Beyond the school-supply giveaway, the event featured shopping with local vendors, carnival games, a bounce house, a food truck and music. Kids and teens who run their own small businesses could set up as vendors for a $10 fee, which Legacy Rise called a low-cost opportunity for young people to gain entrepreneurial experience.
The venue said the pop-up was about bringing the community together, supporting small businesses, investing in youth and helping children start the school year prepared.
No attendance figures or backpack distribution totals have been released.
