A man already facing 18 pending charges was arrested in the Weddington area after allegedly fleeing a Union County Sheriff's Office checkpoint, crashing his vehicle and running from deputies twice.
Xavier Woods now faces 26 total charges and is being held without bond at the Union County Detention Center, Queen City News reported.
The Sheriff's Office charged Woods with eight new offenses:
- Flee to elude
- Possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana
- Possession of a firearm by a felon
- Possession of a Schedule II controlled substance
- Driving while license revoked
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Assault on a government official
- Resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer
The assault charge stems from an illegal U-turn Woods allegedly made at the checkpoint that nearly struck a deputy.
The incident unfolded over the weekend of Sept. 5–6 when the Sheriff's Office set up a checkpoint in the Weddington area. Woods allegedly refused to show a valid driver's license, then made the U-turn and sped away, according to Queen City News.
Deputies pursued Woods briefly before he crashed on Beulah Church Road and ran on foot into a wooded area. A K-9 unit began tracking him.
Before deputies could close in, they learned Woods had caught a ride to a nearby convenience store. They found him on Butterburr Drive in a neighborhood near the store.
Woods ran again. Deputies arrested him without further incident.
Combined with his 18 pre-existing charges, Woods faces 26 total. The nature of the prior charges was not disclosed.
No court date for Woods has been announced.
