Marvin Ridge hosts a surging Charlotte Catholic squad on Friday, Oct. 16, in a Southern Carolina Conference (SCC) game that could reshape the standings behind unbeaten Weddington.

The Mavericks enter at 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the SCC, ranked No. 27 in North Carolina by MaxPreps. Marvin Ridge won a tight one on Oct. 9, edging Porter Ridge 27-26. The Cougars arrive at 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play after a 29-22 road win over Sun Valley on Friday, Oct. 9, in Monroe, as WBTV reported. That was Charlotte Catholic's first victory over the Spartans since 2020.

Both teams' lone SCC loss came against the same opponent. Weddington (7-0, 3-0 SCC) hammered Marvin Ridge 42-3 on Oct. 2 and routed Charlotte Catholic 37-7 on Sept. 18. The result leaves the Cougars and Mavericks in a virtual tie for positioning behind the Warriors.

Head coach David Johnson's first season at Marvin Ridge has produced a program turnaround. The Mavericks opened 2026 with a school-record 77-13 win over Cox Mill, scoring eight offensive touchdowns and a punt return touchdown from senior Anthony Fuller, according to the Enquirer Journal.

Junior quarterback Levi Kerr, the top-ranked quarterback in North Carolina's Class of 2028 according to WSOC-TV, has powered the offense all season. The Mavericks averaged 475 yards per game through their first two contests.

Johnson has embraced tough competition throughout the year. After a 35-33 win over Ashbrook on Sept. 10, he told the Enquirer Journal: "That was a playoff type of football game. They are a phenomenally well coached team with athletes everywhere."

Charlotte Catholic's season has been rockier. The Cougars lost 48-7 to Kings Mountain on Sept. 11 and fell 37-7 to Weddington a week later. Back-to-back SCC wins followed.

Friday's game is Marvin Ridge's first home contest since the Oct. 2 loss to Weddington. Marvin Ridge has not announced a kickoff time.
