Marvin Ridge's varsity football team scored a school-record 77 points in a season-opening rout of Cox Mill on Thursday, Aug. 20. The Mavericks now host Ballantyne Ridge in a Week 2 home opener moved up to Thursday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. because of weather.

Head coach David Johnson's debut could hardly have gone better. The Mavericks piled up 35 first-quarter points and scored eight offensive touchdowns in the 77-13 road win at Cox Mill High School in Concord, the Enquirer Journal reported. Senior Anthony Fuller added a punt return touchdown.

The 77-point output is the most in a single game in program history, according to the Enquirer Journal.

The record stood at 77.

Marvin Ridge was one of four Union County football teams to open the season with a win on Aug. 20, joining Parkwood, Forest Hills and Monroe.

Week 2 moved to Thursday

For the second straight week, weather has reshuffled the North Carolina high school football schedule. Thunderstorms, heavy rain and the threat of localized flooding forecast for Friday, Aug. 28, pushed more than 50 varsity games statewide to Thursday, Sports Illustrated reported.

The National Weather Service forecast heavy downpours and thunderstorms most likely in the afternoon and evening hours, according to Sports Illustrated. That prompted schools across the state to move kickoffs up a day.

Marvin Ridge's home opener against Ballantyne Ridge is among the games moved up. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Marvin Ridge.

The Mavericks' JV squad already opened its season Wednesday, Aug. 26, traveling to Ballantyne Ridge for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

No Week 3 opponent or date has been announced for the varsity team.
