Weddington's football team carries a 2-0 record and a No. 4 state ranking into its Week 3 home game against Union County rival Monroe.
The Warriors have outscored opponents 84-31 through two weeks. Senior quarterback Jared Street set the tone in his first varsity start, completing 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-17 road win over Mooresville on Aug. 21, according to the Enquirer Journal. Street threw scoring passes to senior wide receivers Matthew McCoy and Austin Frazier that night.
Weddington followed with a 35-14 victory over Myers Park on Friday, Aug. 28. NCFootballNews ranked the Warriors No. 4 in its statewide poll after the win, calling them a "stock-up team."
Monroe enters at 1-1 after a difficult Week 2 result. The Redhawks held a lead at West Charlotte on Friday, Aug. 28, before the Lions mounted a second-half comeback to win 22-20, WBTV reported. The comeback gave West Charlotte head coach D.J. McFadden his first victory since taking over the program.
Monroe had opened its 2026 season with a Week 1 win on Aug. 21. The Redhawks were one of four Union County football teams to post opening-week victories, according to the Enquirer Journal.
Street's 68.8 percent completion rate and the Warriors' 84-31 scoring margin through two games will face a Monroe team that showed it can compete deep into a game. The Redhawks led West Charlotte before the late collapse, and they will look to bounce back in a familiar rivalry setting.
