Publix will open a 50,325-square-foot grocery store at Village Commons in Wesley Chapel on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The store will bring about 140 jobs and a third Union County location for the Florida-based, employee-owned chain.

The store at 6460 Weddington Road will open its doors at 7 a.m. that day, the company announced Thursday, Oct. 8. Publix is the anchor tenant of Village Commons Phase III, the final phase of a shopping center developed by Aston Properties at the corner of Weddington Road and Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road.

"We're excited to welcome customers to our new Wesley Chapel Publix," Jared Glover, Publix media relations manager, said in the announcement, first reported by Queen City News.

The Wesley Chapel store joins two existing Publix locations in Union County: one at Marvin Gardens on Providence Road South in Marvin and another at Shoppes at Hanfield Village on Old Charlotte Highway in Monroe. The new store sits less than six miles east of the Marvin location and about five miles southwest of the Monroe store, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Publix opened its first North Carolina store in Ballantyne in early 2014. The chain ranks fourth in the Charlotte market by grocery market share, behind Walmart, Harris Teeter and Food Lion, the Observer reported.

Village Commons Phase III adds roughly 110,000 square feet of retail, dining and service space to the Wesley Chapel corridor, according to Aston Properties.

Other confirmed tenants listed in the developer's leasing materials include Ace Hardware, Novant Health, Heartland Dental, Chase Bank, Hickory Tavern, Greco Fresh Grille, Mattress Firm and Hand & Stone. That's a lot of new storefronts.

The development's layout includes a public gathering area called the Village Green, with seating and walking paths. Lauren Hansen, Aston Properties vice president of leasing, called the project a destination for the community in a June 2025 announcement.

About 22,000 square feet of space in the phase remains available, with the developer seeking restaurants, fitness concepts and family-oriented businesses to fill it.
