Kobe, a retired explosive ordnance detection K9 who served with the Union County Sheriff's Office, has died.

The agency announced Kobe's death Wednesday, Sept. 2, in a Facebook post, calling him a beloved member of the K9 Unit. Queen City News first reported the story.

Kobe was partnered with retired Sgt. Shilo Garner. His job required detecting explosive materials, assisting with security operations and responding to potential threats across Union County.

The Sheriff's Office described Kobe as a teammate, companion and family member to Garner, saying the two spent countless hours working side by side to serve the county and surrounding areas.

After retiring from the agency, Kobe moved to Florida. The Sheriff's Office said he spent his final days at the beach.
