Heavy storms dropped up to 4 inches of rain across parts of Union County Thursday night, triggering a flood advisory that covered the Waxhaw and Marvin area.

The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., issued the initial advisory at 10:18 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, for Mecklenburg and Union counties. An updated advisory followed at 11:45 p.m. for Union County alone, according to the Charlotte Observer. Both expired at 1:15 a.m. Friday.

The NWS warned of possible minor flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Up to 2 inches had already fallen by the time the advisory was issued, with 1 to 2 more inches expected before expiration, WBTV reported.

A radar map posted by WBTV Thursday night showed the flood advisory zone covering the Waxhaw and Marvin area, while a separate flash flood warning was in effect for Indian Land and Fort Mill in Lancaster County, S.C.

By Friday morning, WBTV meteorologist Paul Heggen reported that parts of Union and Lancaster counties had received 2 to 4 inches of rain overnight. The totals prompted both the flood advisory and a flash flood warning in the region.

More storms forecast for Friday, Aug. 28

Additional storms are forecast for Friday afternoon and evening. WBTV's Friday forecast calls for widespread storms with damaging wind gusts, localized flooding and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning all possible. Friday evening high school football games could face weather-related delays.

No reports of specific road closures, property damage or emergency response calls in Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin or Wesley Chapel have been confirmed as of publication.

The NWS and Union County Emergency Services advise residents in flood-prone areas to avoid driving through standing water. Friday afternoon and evening storms could bring additional flooding to the same areas.
