Three design plans for the Waxhaw Skate Park are set to arrive Saturday, Oct. 10, giving residents their first look at the redesign options for a facility commissioners have called the only skate park of its kind in Union County.

The timeline emerged from the Waxhaw Parks, Cultural and Recreation (PCR) Advisory Board's agenda for its Wednesday, Sept. 16 meeting at The Meeting Place. Public information sessions are scheduled for the week of Oct. 12–16, followed by a Board of Commissioners work session on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Board members were "highly encouraged" to attend all three rounds.

The designs come from Pillar Design Studios, the firm the town hired in late May for a $60,000 Skate Park Action Plan. Commissioners also approved $64,000 for critical crack repairs at the park, located at 201 Caldwell St. The Waxhaw Wall reported that commissioners emphasized the park as a heavily used recreational asset.

Pillar's process, which includes site analysis and a full conceptual redesign, began in mid-June and runs through early October, according to a town announcement.

The town has already gathered resident feedback once. Commissioner Richard Daunt announced at the July 14 Board of Commissioners meeting that drop-in input sessions would take place Friday, July 17, at the skate park, with particular encouragement for young residents to share ideas about the park's future. At the Sept. 8 commissioners meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Susanna Wedra thanked the community for attending a Sept. 4 Sk8 Night event. "Additional information regarding planned improvements to the skate park will be forthcoming through social media and future meetings," Wedra said at that meeting.

The Sept. 16 PCR agenda also flagged two other items. Members began discussing new trail rules, prompted by recent trail additions in the area. The agenda did not specify which trails triggered the conversation. Separately, the board raised the Prescott Bridge process and how the advisory board could play a role. No details on the project's scope appeared in available records.

The board is also preparing for a transition. New members start Wednesday, Oct. 21, with orientation and ethics training set for Thursday, Oct. 1. In November, the board will vote on new officers. A joint meeting with the Friends of Waxhaw Parks and Trails is also in the works.

Exact times and locations for the Oct. 12–16 sessions have not been announced. Here are the key dates ahead:

  • Thursday, Oct. 1 — New PCR member orientation and ethics training
  • Saturday, Oct. 10 — Three skate park design drafts delivered
  • Oct. 12–16 — Public information sessions on skate park designs
  • Wednesday, Oct. 21 — New PCR board members start
  • Tuesday, Oct. 27 — Board of Commissioners work session on skate park
