Waxhaw will open a new half-mile trail segment connecting Town Creek Park to the Millbridge neighborhood on Friday, Oct. 16.
The Town of Waxhaw is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. at Town Creek Park, 4240 Waxhaw-Marvin Road, to mark the completion of the 2,870-foot natural-surface path. The segment links the park to Creekview Drive in Millbridge, according to the town's Instagram post.
The project fills a gap that had split the local portion of the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway into two disconnected pieces. A 0.8-mile section in the Millbridge neighborhood and a 0.9-mile segment near Town Creek Park previously required separate trailheads to access, according to the Carolina Thread Trail's map. The new segment connects them.
The town called the project a high-priority greenway segment in its announcement. Funding came from a $60,000 Carolina Thread Trail Implementation Grant, the town's Pedestrian Greenway Fund and its Capital Improvement Plan.
The Twelve Mile Creek Greenway is part of the Carolina Thread Trail, a regional network led by the Catawba Lands Conservancy spanning 15 counties across North and South Carolina. The route runs from Walnut Creek Park in Lancaster, S.C., across a 170-foot suspension bridge over Twelve Mile Creek and into Waxhaw, according to TrailLink.
No timeline or funding has been announced for future extensions that would connect the Waxhaw segments to trails farther west in Lancaster County, S.C.
The ceremony is free and open to the public.
