Waxhaw-area voters in Precinct 021 will cast ballots at a different location for the Nov. 3 General Election.
The Union County Board of Elections adopted a resolution Monday, Sept. 14, temporarily transferring voters assigned to Precinct 021, known as Jackson VFD, to Hermon Baptist Church at 9713 Lancaster Hwy. in Waxhaw. The change applies only to the Tuesday, Nov. 3, General Election, according to the county's posted resolution.
The resolution, posted on the Union County government website at 3:21 p.m. Monday, cites North Carolina General Statute 163-128. That law allows a county elections board to temporarily move voters from one precinct to an adjacent precinct after adopting a resolution and receiving approval from the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Whether the State Board has granted that approval has not been publicly confirmed.
No reason was given. The number of registered voters affected was also not disclosed.
Under state law, the board must give 45 days' notice before the election by advertising the transfer in a newspaper of general circulation in the county. The board must also post the resolution at the courthouse and the elections office and mail a copy to the chair of every political party in the county.
Separately, the board is required to mail a notice of the precinct change to every affected registered voter no later than 30 days before the election.
Voters who prefer not to wait for Election Day have options. Early voting runs from Thursday, Oct. 15, through Saturday, Oct. 31, at several locations in the Waxhaw area, including the Waxhaw Recreation Barn at 5412 Waxhaw-Marvin Rd., Wesley Chapel VFD Station 41 at 315 Waxhaw-Indian Trail Rd. and Wesley Chapel VFD Station 42 at 8821 New Town Rd. Early voting sites are open 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
As we reported Sept. 11, the Nov. 3 ballot includes a countywide jail bond referendum, U.S. Senate and U.S. House races, state legislative seats and judicial contests.
The voter registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Residents who miss that cutoff can register and vote at any early voting site during the early voting period. Absentee ballot requests must reach the Union County Board of Elections by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20.
On Election Day, polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. Voters can reach the board at (704) 283-3809 or [email protected].
