A late safety gave Weddington's girls flag football team a 10-8 win over Mooresville on Saturday, Sept. 26, keeping the Warriors unbeaten at 5-0.
It was the tightest finish of the season. The Warriors had outscored their first four opponents by a combined 112-0 before Mooresville became the first team to put points on the board against them, according to MaxPreps.
Mooresville entered the doubleheader at 5-0 itself, fresh off a 41-18 win over West Mecklenburg. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 5-1.
Through five games, Weddington has outscored opponents 122-8. The Warriors opened the season with a pair of 37-0 wins over CATA on Sept. 14, shut out Charlotte Catholic 19-0 on Sept. 15 and blanked Sun Valley 19-0 on Sept. 22.
The Weddington High School athletics department posted the result on X, noting the safety clinched the victory before game two of the doubleheader began. A result for game two had not been posted as of Sunday, Sept. 27.
First varsity season
This fall marks the first year girls flag football carries full NCHSAA varsity status in North Carolina. The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) sanctioned the sport on May 6, making the state the 22nd to do so, WBTV reported. More than 150 schools were expected to field teams, and the David and Nicole Tepper Foundation contributed $1 million to support competing programs.
All Union County high schools added girls flag football for the inaugural season, the Enquirer Journal reported. Weddington coach Sean Cox, appointed over the summer, helped create a middle school girls flag league through the Wesley Chapel Weddington Athletic Association in 2024 to build a pipeline for high school play.
"We are truly on the ground level of progression in the flag football world," Cox told the Enquirer Journal on Sept. 10, before the season's first results were in.
The turnaround has been dramatic. Weddington went 1-3 in the regular season last year, when the sport was not yet sanctioned, and lost to Marvin Ridge 6-26 in the Union County quarterfinals on Nov. 4, 2025. The Warriors are now ranked No. 19 in the state by MaxPreps.
What's next
Weddington travels to Marvin Ridge on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. The Warriors then visit Ballantyne Ridge on Thursday, Oct. 1, before hosting Cuthbertson in a conference matchup on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
