Weddington's varsity football team brings a 2-0 record into its first home game of the 2026 season Friday night, hosting Monroe at 7 p.m.

The Warriors have outscored opponents 84-31 through two road wins. Senior quarterback Jared Street opened the year at Mooresville on Aug. 21, completing 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-17 victory. Senior wide receivers Matthew McCoy and Austin Frazier each caught a touchdown pass from Street that night.

The offense kept rolling in Week 2. Weddington beat No. 19 Myers Park 35-14 on Aug. 28. NCFootballNews called the Warriors a "stock-up team" after that result.

The program entered 2026 with high expectations. NCFootballNews ranked Weddington No. 4 in its preseason statewide poll and reported that the Massey Ratings placed the Warriors No. 2 in North Carolina behind Hough. Last season, Weddington went 12-2 in the NCHSAA 7A classification and reached the 7A West Region final before falling to Grimsley 13-7.

Two early blowout wins suggest the Warriors are living up to the billing.

The school's athletics department is urging fans to pack the stands in green for a Green Out theme. Weddington High School Athletics posted on X on Thursday, Sept. 3, calling on the community to show up in numbers for the home opener. Earlier in the week, the department reminded fans to follow Union County Public Schools event protocols ahead of the game.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Weddington. The Warriors' next home game is Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. against Crest.
