Weddington girls tennis is 6-0, and head coach Mike Murphy said it is the strongest start he has ever seen from the program.
The Warriors rolled past Hough 8-1 on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at home to cap a run that includes 9-0 wins over East Lincoln and Charlotte Christian and a pair of 5-4 nail-biters against Charlotte Catholic and Cox Mill.
Murphy originally coached the Weddington program from 2005 to 2017 before stepping away. He returned in 2023 and is now in his fourth season back at the helm.
"This is definitely the deepest team I have in terms of good players and players who play a lot of tennis," Murphy told the Enquirer Journal. "Our depth is very helpful in that regard."
That depth shows across the lineup. Junior Evie Kayes is unbeaten at 6-0 in No. 1 singles and pairs with junior Mariana Cuebas for a 2-0 mark in No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Mackenzie Kirby holds a 5-0 record at No. 4 singles. Freshman Srinithi Daggubati (No. 5 singles) and senior Emily Hall (No. 6 singles) are each 2-0.
The Charlotte Catholic match tested that depth. Murphy said it came down to the final doubles match before Weddington clinched. Against Cox Mill, the Warriors secured the win in singles, then substituted players and still won by a single match.
Weddington competes in the Southern Carolina Conference, where Marvin Ridge figures to be the primary challenger. Murphy told the Enquirer Journal that the Mavericks are a big step up in competition from any team Weddington has faced so far. He noted Marvin Ridge added a freshman at No. 1 singles who he called a very good player, and said their top four lines will present tough matchups.
The Warriors' next conference test is against Marvin Ridge.
