Weddington High School field hockey player Emily Lund has been nominated for the Charlotte Observer's Athlete of the Week after scoring four goals in two games.
Lund tallied a hat trick and a game-tying goal against Ardrey Kell during games played Aug. 20-22, according to the Charlotte Observer. That goal against Ardrey Kell sparked a Weddington comeback win.
The Warriors are unbeaten.
Weddington's club field hockey team is 3-0 to open the 2026 season, which the Charlotte Observer described as the first time in school history the program has started with three straight victories. Lund has accounted for five of the team's goals across those three wins.
Weddington High School Athletics announced the nomination on X on Wednesday, Aug. 26, urging the community to rally behind Lund and vote on the Charlotte Observer's website. The athletics department used the hashtag #GoBigDub in its post.
Field hockey operates as a club sport at Weddington rather than a sanctioned NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) varsity program. The team opened its 2026 season Thursday, Aug. 13, with a road game at Reagan High School. Varsity took the field at 6:30 p.m. that night, with JV playing at 5 p.m.
Lund's four-goal week stood out in a nomination pool that covers high school athletes across the Charlotte area. The Charlotte Observer's poll allows readers to vote for their pick online.
Voting closes at noon Saturday, Aug. 29.
