Weddington running back Brian Walker is a nominee for The Charlotte Observer's High School Football Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 221 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries.

Walker's breakout performance came in the Warriors' 49-17 season-opening win over Mooresville on Friday, Aug. 21. The game was played in the rain, but Walker averaged 31.6 yards per carry and found the end zone three times to help Weddington build a commanding lead.

That's seven touches. Three scores. A stat line that put a Weddington athlete on the regional ballot.

The Weddington High School Athletics department announced the nomination on X on Wednesday, Aug. 26, linking to the Charlotte Observer's voting page. The department described Walker's night as "7 carries 221 yards & 3 touchdowns in win vs Mooresville."

Walker wasn't the only Warrior who produced in the opener. Quarterback Jared Street, making his first varsity start, completed 11 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns, according to the Enquirer Journal's game recap. Street connected with senior wide receivers Matthew McCoy and Austin Frazier for touchdown passes during the rainy Friday night game.

Between Walker's rushing and Street's efficient passing debut, Weddington's offense put up 49 points in its first game of the 2026 season. The Warriors led wire-to-wire against a Mooresville squad that managed just 17 points in response.

The Observer's poll covers NCHSAA and NCISAA programs across the greater Charlotte region. Voting closes at noon Friday, Aug. 28.

Weddington's Week 2 opponent and game date have not been confirmed by the school.
