Weddington's boys varsity soccer team beat Parkwood 2-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to claim its home opener for the 2026 season.
The Warriors had to fight for it. Weddington High School Athletics described the result on X as the team hanging on against the visiting Wolves in what became another close contest in a season full of them.
Coach Keith Beaty's squad opened the year with a 1-1 draw against South Mecklenburg, according to the Enquirer Journal. Road losses followed. The Warriors fell 1-0 at Hickory Ridge and 4-3 at CCDS before returning home to face Parkwood.
The Parkwood win gives Weddington its second victory of the season. MaxPreps listed the Warriors' overall record at 1-3-1 heading into their next scheduled game, though that figure may not yet reflect the Tuesday result.
Tight margins have defined the early schedule. The South Mecklenburg draw ended level at one goal apiece. The Hickory Ridge loss came by a single goal. Even the CCDS defeat, the highest-scoring game of the bunch at seven combined goals, was decided by one. The Parkwood result followed the same pattern.
MaxPreps described the Warriors' recent stretch as a run of nail-biters in a preview ahead of the team's next game.
Weddington competes in the Southern Carolina Conference but has not yet begun league play. The Warriors travel to Monroe for a non-conference match on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m.
