Weddington's women's tennis team beat rival Marvin Ridge 7-2 on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Weddington High School. The win pulled the Warriors into a tie for first place in the Southern Carolina Conference.
Weddington improved to 16-1 on the season, Weddington High School Athletics said on X. Marvin Ridge dropped to 9-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play, according to MaxPreps.
The score was identical to the teams' first meeting. Marvin Ridge had handed Weddington its only loss of the season on Aug. 27, winning 7-2 at Marvin Ridge High School. This time, on their home courts, the Warriors won by the same margin.
The match carried enough weight that Weddington canceled a non-conference match against Ballantyne Ridge to accommodate the rescheduled SCC showdown. Weddington Athletics announced the schedule change on Sept. 23.
Marvin Ridge Athletics called it "a BIG SCC matchup" before first serve.
@MavAthletics: "MATCH DAY! Women's Tennis is headed down the road to Weddington for a BIG SCC matchup! First serve is set for 4:00 PM. LOCK IN AND LET'S GO LADY MAVS!"
Weddington entered the match after Senior Night on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when the Warriors beat Porter Ridge 7-2.
Players recognized by MaxPreps for standout performances during the Warriors' 2026 campaign include Brynne Kirby, Emily Hall, Srinithi Daggubati, Hartley Barnes, Mackenzie Kirby, Mariana Cuebas, Jazelle Patel, Evie Kayes, Libby Bednar and Siya Chansoria. For the Mavericks, Clara Jamison, Ashley Marshall, Zoe Banchik and Zaara Mandavia have earned player-of-the-match honors this season.
Both teams return to action Thursday, Oct. 1. Weddington travels to Piedmont High School for a 4 p.m. match. Marvin Ridge hosts Charlotte Catholic at 4 p.m. The 7A West Pre-Regional is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, at Ballantyne Ridge in Charlotte, followed by the SCC Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 9 a.m. at Piedmont High School in Monroe.
