Weddington's volleyball team swept Porter Ridge 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 12, in the first round of the Southern Carolina Conference tournament.

The Warriors entered the postseason ranked No. 23 in North Carolina by MaxPreps, carrying a 19-9 overall record and a 7-5 mark in conference play. That record placed them in a tie for third in the SCC standings.

Head coach Katie Jamerson, a 2021 Marvin Ridge graduate who won a state championship with the Mavericks in 2018, has guided Weddington through a competitive regular season.

The Warriors split the regular-season series with Porter Ridge. Weddington won 3-0 at home on Thursday, Sept. 10, but dropped the Oct. 6 road match 3-1, a result MaxPreps recorded as a forfeit. The Oct. 12 tournament rematch went decisively Weddington's way.

Jamerson has deep ties to the conference she now coaches in. In a September profile by the Enquirer Journal, she described returning to coach against her alma mater Marvin Ridge on Sept. 6 as "bittersweet." The Warriors fell 3-0 to the Mavericks that night, but Jamerson expressed gratitude for the chance to compete in the same gym where she once played.

Weddington's Round 2 opponent is Cuthbertson. The two area rivals meet Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Porter Ridge High School.

The Cavaliers bring a six-match win streak into the matchup. Cuthbertson finished the regular season 14-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play, as we reported Oct. 11. Both teams earned third-place finishes in the SCC standings, setting up a bracket collision between programs trending in opposite directions: Weddington stumbled down the stretch while Cuthbertson surged.

At the top of the bracket sits Marvin Ridge, the SCC regular-season champion at 24-3 overall and 12-0 in conference. The Mavericks claimed their fourth consecutive conference title, as we reported Oct. 13.

Off the court, Weddington's women's golf team is scheduled to compete in the SCC Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m., according to the Weddington High School Athletics account on X. No results were available at publication time.
