Weddington's women's tennis team won the Southern Carolina Conference championship on Wednesday, Oct. 7, finishing an 18-1 season with the program's top individual honor going to head coach Mike Murphy.
Murphy was named SCC Coach of the Year, Weddington High School Athletics announced on X shortly after the conference tournament wrapped at Piedmont High School in Monroe. The tournament began at 9 a.m.
The school's athletics department separately announced the championship in a post celebrating the team. MaxPreps had not yet updated its conference tournament results for Weddington as of Thursday, Oct. 8, though the school's official account confirmed the title.
The Warriors posted a 10-1 conference record and went 18-1 overall during the regular season, according to MaxPreps. Their lone loss came Aug. 27 at Marvin Ridge, 7-2.
That loss did not linger.
Weddington answered with a 7-2 home win over the Mavericks on Sept. 30. The Warriors then beat Cuthbertson 6-3 on Tuesday, Oct. 6, in their final regular-season match before heading to Monroe for the conference tournament.
The season opened with an 8-1 win at Carmel Christian on Aug. 11 and a 9-0 home victory over East Lincoln on Aug. 12. After the Marvin Ridge loss, Weddington won its final 10 matches of the regular season before capturing the conference tournament title.
The athletics department also recognized multiple Warriors who earned all-conference honors, though the individual names appeared only in an image post and could not be confirmed in text form.
Nine players received player-of-the-match recognition from MaxPreps at various points during the season: Mackenzie Kirby, Hartley Barnes, Brynne Kirby, Emily Hall, Srinithi Daggubati, Mariana Cuebas, Jazelle Patel, Evie Kayes and Libby Bednar. That list reflects the roster's depth across the lineup, though it is not the same as the all-conference selections.
Weddington now turns to the NCHSAA playoffs. The Warriors are scheduled to host a first-round match on Monday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m., with the opponent still to be announced, per MaxPreps. The West Regional is listed for Friday, Oct. 16, through Saturday, Oct. 17, at Ballantyne Ridge in Charlotte.
